Arsenal's Controversial Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Will Conclude In the Upcoming Season

The North London club has officially announced that its contentious sponsorship partnership with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.

Background and Scrutiny

This deal, said to be worth around ÂŁ10 million annually, was first established and has since been heavily criticized.

This criticism is due to accusations of Rwandan assistance for the M23 rebel group in persistent fighting in the eastern part of the adjacent DRC.

In February, Arsenal faced allegations of delivering an "outrageous" snub to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.

However, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the primary aims of the partnership – advocating preservation and eco-friendly travel, motivating countless fans to discover the country, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” declared an club announcement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and stage additional international competitions while implementing local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches develop their skills and encourage more involvement in athletics nationwide.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, characterized the deal as a “significant journey” and stated it had been “propelling” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the protest movement Gunners Supporting Peace demonstrating outside the club's home ground during the initial Champions League semi-final match against Paris Saint-Germain in April's conclusion.

Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to conceal the Rwanda branding on jerseys.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

During that period, the French champions extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

At the same time, Atlético Madrid signed a fresh deal for the identical duration that has caused the logo being carried on the Madrid-based team's first-team and women's team jerseys.
