Britain Ready to Use Seized Russia's Assets to Fund Ukraine's War Effort

The UK is prepared to move forward with using the total value of immobilized Russian holdings to support Ukraine's defense operations, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has announced.

In a joint statement, the heads of state of the Britain, the French Republic, and the Federal Republic of Germany stated that this coordinated action would escalate tension on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and persuade Moscow to engage in negotiations.

They added that the move would be executed in tight collaboration with the America.

United Kingdom sanctions have immobilized over £25bn of Russia's resources since Moscow began its comprehensive attack against Ukraine in 2022. But, until now, resources provided to the Ukrainian government using Russia's assets had exclusively been drawn from earnings and returns generated on them.

Sir Keir informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, the French Republic, and Germany were in agreement in their desire to drive progress toward utilizing the full value of the immobilized Moscow's national holdings to conclude the conflict.

He added that additional restrictions in the coming days and weeks would apply more pressure on Moscow.

This statement comes after European Union officials gathered in the Danish capital recently to debate utilizing seized Russian holdings for a 140-billion-euro loan to the Ukrainian nation.

Recently, American leader Donald Trump called on G7 allies to confiscate or otherwise use seized Russia's funds, according to media sources.

The worth of seized Russia's funds in the EU is estimated to be almost €211bn.

President Zelensky urges Britain's Sir Keir Starmer to join the Purl initiative

The Russian government carried out extensive aerial attacks all over Ukraine on that day, causing power cuts in large parts of Ukraine's capital, the city, and eight other regions.

Two people were lost their lives and no fewer than 20 people were injured in the attack, the Ukrainian government stated.

In a post on X after the incident, Zelensky stated that the strategic strike aimed at non-military and power facilities.

"What is required is not empty words but firm measures - from the America, the European Union, and the seven nations - in delivering air defence systems and enforcing sanctions," he wrote.

"Every sanction decision undermines Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky wrote, in a separate post.

In the same period, Zelensky informed media outlets he would press Sir Keir to participate in the weapons procurement program, under which alliance members purchase arms from the United States to give to the Ukrainian forces.

While applauding the United Kingdom's consistent assistance for the Ukrainian government, he noted it should send a clear signal that it would take part in the system, as well as impose additional restrictions on Russia.
