Northern Canada has been gripped by a severe and lengthy Arctic outbreak, with thermometers lingering from 20 to 40 degrees below zero for weeks. On Tuesday, Braeburn in the Yukon recorded -55.7C, marking its chilliest December reading in half a century.
Meanwhile, Mayo and Dawson endured 16 consecutive nights colder than minus 40 degrees, with Mayo experiencing a low of -50.4C at the start of the week. Whitehorse also recorded a series of ten nights when readings fell to minus 30 degrees or lower.
The bitter chill extended its reach south through Christmas week. In Edmonton, the Christmas overnight low dipped under -28 degrees Celsius.
December 26th was anticipated to usher in minimum temperatures of at least minus 20C through a wide swath, including Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec.
This harsh winter weather is expected to continue through the start of January. There are warnings of possible electrical grid strain in Yukon territory over the next several days, as the territory’s power grid comes under strain from historically high electricity consumption.
This extended freeze is the result of a stationary polar vortex across the northern part of the continent this month, which funnels frigid northern air southward. Conversely, sections of America recorded the hottest December 25th in their history as temperatures soared about 15-30C above the seasonal average. In many areas, conditions felt more typical of April or May than late December.
Multiple states established new Christmas temperature highs. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, reached 25 degrees Celsius on Christmas, exceeding the old record of 22C from 1982. Cities including Austin and Dallas, in Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina were also among those that recorded temperatures above 25C.
Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last through Boxing Day and the days ahead, with unseasonable heat forecast to sweep into the south-eastern states later in the week.
