Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
