Our team is verifying images and video posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the location from which the images were from was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.

Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
