Liverpool's Captain Admits Team is in a Mess, Challenges Teammates on Responsibility

The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing evaluation of the club's woeful title defence, admitting the reigning champions are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while doubting whether every player is taking responsibility for the current downturn.

Van Dijk usually speaks the press after a game as part of his role as team leader. Saturday was different, however. His voice was much louder – audible enough that any teammate in the stadium corridors could listen in – and he shook with anger while urging the dressing room to react. “You should be angry,” he emphasized. “The main thing for me is that everyone has to take responsibility.” Asked whether that is happening, he answered: “I don’t know. But it's essential. That's crucial I want the players to do. It's challenging during tough periods but we have to do it if we aim to recover of this.”

Summer Signings and Broader Issues

Liverpool invested almost £450m to replenish a title-winning squad in the summer but have gone backwards, with several high-profile signings struggling to contribute so far. The captain insisted that Liverpool’s problems go beyond the recent additions. “It's difficult for all involved,” he said. “What I want is for each player to be answerable on the field. Van Dijk added: “In the current term we lack any steady form, we allow excessive scores, we are being out-fought and everyone is responsible for it and I hope everyone sees that. We have to take responsibility to reverse the situation and tempting to point fingers but unity is essential. We have been through it together and claimed the title and all contributed, and when you go through a challenging phase you must remain united and not point fingers.

“You have to be a man and confront the hardship and persist, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are at the wrong place in my view, because this club has been enduring many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve consistently emerged of it. But it doesn’t mean it is straightforward, it’s tiring but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next Sunday, after the midweek visit of PSV in the European competition. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another opportunity so what am I going to do, go home and cry? No, I’m going to go home and try to think how we can improve results and hopefully that is the collective focus as well.”
