Suspected Bondi Beach Attackers Acted Independently and Received No Training in the Southeast Asian Nation, Investigators Confirm.

The two suspected individuals who carried out the lethal shooting at a Jewish celebration on Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 lives, appear to have acted alone, as stated by Australian law enforcement.

Authorities further stated that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, 24, travelled to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary included landing in the capital Manila before connecting on the day of arrival to Davao City. The duo returned to Sydney on 29 November.

Lack of Proof of Planning During Stay

Police assert the pair did not receive any type of attack-related instruction or "logistical preparation" during their visit in the Philippines. Early findings from Philippine authorities suggest they "hardly ventured out of" their accommodation.

The shooting—labeled as Australia's most severe mass shooting since 1996—has been officially designated a terrorist incident.

"We are currently analyzing the evidence," the commissioner stated, explaining that early evaluations suggest that "the alleged offenders are alleged to have been lone actors."

Australian Federal Police Chief Krissy Barrett informed the press on Tuesday that CCTV footage tracking the alleged gunmen's activities in the Philippines had been handed over to Australian investigators.

"Our investigation shows little to no indication to suggest these suspects were members of a wider network, or were instructed by others to carry out an act of violence," the police chief emphasized.

Yet, the pair were additionally not in the Philippines as tourists, the official clarified. She underscored that, since the investigation is still active, additional details may surface.

Ideology and Court Proceedings

Earlier, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese remarked it seems both alleged gunmen were "motivated by the so-called Islamic State" beliefs.

During the shooting, Sajid Akram was shot dead by police. He and his son Naveed—reportedly carrying rifles—are accused of having targeted guests at the Jewish festival event.

Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the attack, has been charged with 59 charges. These include 15 charges of murder and one count of carrying out a act of terrorism. He is expected to face court in April.

Travel Details

In the wake following the shooting, immigration officials in the Philippines stated that the older suspect had entered the country using an Indian passport, while his younger suspect used an Australian passport.

The pair had declared the southern city of Davao as their intended endpoint. Their pre-arranged return flight to Australia was for Sydney.

Davao is a sprawling urban center on the eastern side of Mindanao, the Philippines' primary southern island. It is noted that, Militant militants have been known to operate in impoverished parts of southern and western Mindanao.
