The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
