The Legendary Williams, 45, Receives Special Entry for First Australian Open in Five Years.

A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. The Australian Open added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
