Ultra-Conservative Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming President.

In a decisive final ballot, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Commanding Victory

With more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Centered On Security and Migration

Known for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to combat growing insecurity and drastically restrict migration.

Despite his clear popular vote triumph, Kast does not hold an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are counted together.

This legislative situation might complicate his plans, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.

"There are numerous questions about what a Kast administration will be that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will implement them," noted a political science expert.
